Displaced Homemaker Program @ the One-Stop

Displaced Homemakers Center at the Bergen One-Stop Program provides a variety of professional services to assist women who are separated, divorced, widowed, or spouse disabled, to make appropriate career decisions. Many of the programs and services offered are supported by state and federal grants and contracts. Every year, this unique program helps thousands of women to achieve self-sufficiency, learn English, improve basic literacy skills, and make improvements in their lives. Classes are available day and evening to meet your individual needs.

  • Computer literacy classes: Designed for beginners who need assistance with the basics: using a mouse, setting up an e-mail account, doing research on the internet and creating a Word document.
  • Resume Development and Interviewing Skills.
  • Individual Professional Career Counseling (by appointment only) and Group Counseling.
  • Referrals to Grant-Eligible Occupational Skills Training leading to nationally-Recognized Certifications.
  • Adult Education: High School Equivalency and English-as-a-Second-Language courses.
  • Adult Basic Math and Language Arts Review.
  • Employability Skills Training Certification.
  • On-the-Job Training and Work-Based Experiences.
  • Job Search and Placement Assistance.
  • Assistance with Vocational and/or Postsecondary Admissions and Financial Aid Procedures.
  • Personal Growth, Financial Literacy, and Assertive Communication Skills Training. 


Career Exploration for Women in Transition: For women who are either entering the job market for the first time or re-entering after a prolonged absence, this intensive career exploration/life skills workshop is designed to assist women to successfully transition to the contemporary workplace. Vocational and Personality Assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Self-Directed Search are offered.

Support groups for Women: Designed for women in transition (divorce, separation, and death of spouse) who need assistance to weather the financial, social and/or emotional storm.

Activities For Women’s History Month:  Designed to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of all women during the month of March. Workshops focus on health, fitness, nutrition and self-care.

Re-Employment Opportunities (R/O):  Information Sessions are held Mondays and Thursdays at 8:45 or 12:45 at the Bergen One-Stop Career Center, 60 State Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601. All sessions start promptly. Please see receptionist upon arrival for more details. 201-329-9600.



Informal Workshops on Career/Job Seeking Issues - 1 pm - Room 204. Presented by Anne Wallman.

  • October 2: How to address gaps in employment on resumes, cover letters, and in interviews.
  • October 9: Regulations for running a home-based catering business.
  • October 23: Networking for business start-up and job-seeking purposes.
  • October 30: Working in the Holistic Health Care industry.

 MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)-October 11, 10:00 am-12:00 pm, Room 204. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a powerful tool to help identify your unique gifts. Knowing your type helps you to be more self-aware, especially where you focus your energy, gather information, and make decisions affecting your approach to work, life, and career.
